Strong as a Mother: Why Dieting Like Your Mom Doesn’t Work Anymore
Break the cycle. Be strong and healthy—on your terms.
Whether you're a mom or not, odds are—you grew up watching one diet.
Maybe it was Weight Watchers.
Maybe it was SlimFast.
Maybe it was skipping meals, cutting carbs, or living on cottage cheese and melon.
We inherited a lot from our moms—strength, resilience, humor, hustle.
But let’s be honest:
We also inherited their rules.
The food guilt.
The scale obsession.
The belief that
healthy = skinny.
And this Mother’s Day, I want to talk about that, and what it means to build strength, lose weight, and feel healthy in your 40s, 50s, and beyond.
How Diet Culture Shaped Us: The Legacy of Our Moms' Weight Struggles
🕰 In the ‘60s & ‘70s, thin was the goal—and if that meant chain-smoking to curb your appetite or popping a diet pill, so be it.
💃 In the ‘80s, fat was the enemy. SnackWell’s were "healthy," and moms did Jane Fonda workouts while sipping Tab and skipping dinner.
🥄 In the ‘90s, we watched moms down SlimFast, eat Lean Cuisines, and call it willpower. Dessert was “cheating,” and feeling full was suspicious.
📉 In the 2000s, it was all carbs vs. protein. South Beach, Atkins, detox teas, and juice cleanses. If you weren’t dieting, were you even trying?
We watched. We absorbed.
And whether we meant to or not, we started to believe the same things:
That less is better.
That hunger means progress.
That food should be earned.
That health = being smaller.
Why Being Strong & Healthy Matters After 45
We’re not dieting to disappear anymore.
We’re eating to live.
We’re not chasing skinny.
We’re chasing
strong, energized, capable.
Because we’ve got things to do—and feeling weak, foggy, or uncomfortable in our bodies isn’t an option.
Being strong means:
💪 Carrying the Costco haul without throwing out your back.
🧳 Lifting your own suitcase into the overhead bin like a boss.
🐾 Chasing grandkids, dogs, or both without getting winded.
🧼 Getting up off the toilet or the floor without needing a hand.
🚶♀️ Hitting your step goal because movement = medicine.
If you want real independence, real energy, and real health—you need strength. Especially if you’re a woman over 45 trying to lose weight and feel like yourself again.
Why Old-School Diets Aren’t Working for You Anymore
Still skipping meals?
Still doing intermittent fasting and wondering why you’re exhausted by 3PM?
You’re not alone.
What worked in your 30s doesn’t work now.
Why? Because your body has changed—and it needs better fuel, smarter habits, and more muscle mass, not fewer calories.
If you’re doing all the “right things” but still gaining weight over 45…
👉 it’s not that you’re doing too little.
👉 it’s that you're using outdated tools.
Fasting windows.
Endless cardio.
None of it helps you build strength, regulate hunger hormones, or improve your metabolism long-term.
The New Rules for Weight Loss Over 45
Welcome to this new decade.
This isn’t your mother’s weight loss plan.

🚶♀️
